Advancing the Circular Economy in Plastics

Rumpke’s new state-of-the-art facility enhances Ohio’s circular economy, supporting companies like Vertix with increased recycling capacity for sustainable plastic production.

Advancing the Circular Economy in Plastics

The “circular economy” for plastic and recycling is a consistent subject of interest, particularly at Vertix, where we have a goal to process 200 million pounds of recycled plastic every year. Vertix uses that post-consumer resin to support the manufacture of plastic bottles, closures and other packaging components across a number of industries.
In order to hit that big goal, however, we require a constant supply of post-consumer recycled plastic – in the form of milk jugs and other high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles – which is not always easy to find.

That’s why we were thrilled to read that Rumpke open the doors of its state-of-the-art Recycling & Resource Center. The Vertix team also toured the facility recently, and the cutting-edge technologies and processes Rumpke now has in place bode well for companies like ours who utilize this material, and for plastic recycling in central Ohio and across the state.

Rumpke’s new $100 million facility is the largest and most sophisticated in North America, and the company says the center can now process up to 250,000 tons of material annually. This will be critical as our region continues to grow to an estimated 3 million people, and companies like Vertix, Axium and others expand their businesses here.

It’s innovative and forward-thinking such as this from the team at Rumpke that will allow all of our businesses to succeed together. This also continues to demonstrate how recycling can work so well in our state when the systems, businesses, technologies and access to recycling programs all line up in order to create that circular economy for plastics.

Rumpke deserves a sincere congratulations and thank you, from Vertix and our entire community, for helping push the recycling industry forward. And we encourage you to read more about Rumpke and the company’s efforts in the Columbus Dispatch.
